Functional features and weight of tile adhesive

Modern design very often uses tiles as additional interior elements, both indoors and for building cladding. The market can offer many options for tiles and mosaics. In order for tile masonry to last a long time, specialized adhesive substances should be used instead of the usual mortar.

Adhesive mixtures are available in a wide range. Their variety is determined by the functions they are able to perform:

• Work with materials at low and high temperatures (external finishing or fireplaces)
• Ability to quickly fix elements to prevent slipping and sliding

The specific weight of adhesive for cement-based tile mixtures is often about 1.3 - 1.5 g/cm³, but the exact value depends on the brand and manufacturer. Consumption per 1 m² is calculated by layer thickness: roughly 1.3 - 1.5 kg of dry mixture for each 1 mm of layer. Therefore, 5 kg/m² is not a fixed value, but an approximate consumption for a layer of about 3 - 4 mm.

Important characteristics of adhesive for porcelain stoneware

Porcelain stoneware slabs are strong, heavy and have a dense structure. Therefore, for high-quality installation, it is necessary to use a base with a high adhesive capacity. The main parameters when choosing it are the weight of the tile it can hold and the strength of adhesion. Successful work with porcelain stoneware requires high adhesion (bonding to the surface) and plasticity of the adhesive mortar. In addition, it is important to pay attention to the layer of the product when laying floor structures — it should be equal to the thickness of the tile itself.

Often, a packaged bag of adhesive for porcelain stoneware weighs 25 kg. The mixture consumption at a layer thickness of 1 mm is 1.3 kg/m². Usually it contains graded sand, modifying additives and cement. When choosing a product, it is important to check the technical data sheet, intended use and safety requirements for mixing and application.

Epoxy adhesive for construction purposes

Epoxy adhesive includes a base and a catalyst, which are mixed immediately before use. When using epoxy adhesive, it should be remembered that the amount of material consumed increases on uneven surfaces or with deformations.

The weight of epoxy adhesive is calculated by the layer volume:

WEA = adhesive density × application area × layer thickness

Weight of construction PVA adhesive

PVA adhesive for construction purposes is used mainly for paper, cardboard, wood, plywood, fiberboard and some finishing work. PVA is convenient for furniture assembly and carpentry, but its resistance to water, temperature and dynamic loads depends on the adhesive class.

The weight of PVA adhesive in a package may be 0.5 kg or more. Consumption is usually around 100–300 g/m² for dense application, but it can be higher on porous substrates or in special work. Ordinary PVA should not be considered fully waterproof; for damp conditions, moisture-resistant grades should be selected and the application temperature requirements should be followed.
