When buying shell limestone, check color, structure, number of pores, block geometry, cracks and crumbling. Stone that is too loose, uneven or wet may perform worse under load and outdoor conditions.

In practice, a simple approximate test is sometimes used: a large block weighing about 16 kg is split. If it does not break apart, the stone is considered stronger; if it breaks into several large pieces, the strength is lower. This method does not replace laboratory testing or a certificate, but it can help identify obviously weak material.

For construction, it is especially important to check the strength grade, frost resistance and batch documents. Shell limestone descriptions often mention frost resistance of about 50-65 cycles, but the actual value depends on the deposit, density, moisture and quality of the specific stone.
