MDF weight per m², sheet density and batch calculation

MDF sheet mass is calculated from its dimensions, thickness and density: sheet mass = length × width × thickness × density. If the manufacturer declares mass per unit area, it is better to use sheet mass = area × mass per square metre.

For example, a 2800 × 2070 × 16 mm sheet at an assumed density of 750 kg/m³ has a calculated mass of about 69.6 kg. Ten sheets weigh about 695.5 kg before adding the pallet and packaging. The 750 kg/m³ value is an input for this example, not a universal MDF density.

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is a wood-based panel made from fibres bonded with resin and pressed under heat and pressure. Everyday product descriptions use “weight” in kilograms, although kilograms measure mass; this article follows that familiar wording while keeping the calculation physically correct.

Data needed for the calculation

The most useful input is the declared mass per unit area of the specific board in kg/m². You then need only its length, width and quantity. If kg/m² is unavailable, derive it from the panel thickness and mean density in the product data sheet.

Use inputs in this order of preference:

  1. declared mass of one sheet;
  2. declared mass per unit area;
  3. density and thickness of the specific board;
  4. a reference density only for an early estimate.

Do not borrow density from a similar panel, another manufacturer or another thickness. Mean density can vary even within one product family.

Sheet and batch weight formulas

For length L and width W in millimetres, sheet area is S = (L / 1000) × (W / 1000), where S is in m².

With mass per unit area q, m₁ = S × q, where m₁ is sheet mass in kg and q is in kg/m².

With density ρ in kg/m³ and thickness t in millimetres, q = ρ × t / 1000. The full sheet formula is m₁ = (L / 1000) × (W / 1000) × (t / 1000) × ρ. For n identical sheets, m = m₁ × n.

Add the pallet, cover boards, wrapping and straps separately. The calculator covers board material only.

Worked check

For a 2800 × 2070 × 16 mm sheet at an assumed 750 kg/m³:

  1. area: 2.8 × 2.07 = 5.796 m²;
  2. mass per unit area: 750 × 16 / 1000 = 12 kg/m²;
  3. sheet mass: 5.796 × 12 = 69.552 kg;
  4. mass of 10 sheets: 69.552 × 10 = 695.52 kg.

Calculated MDF mass per square metre by thickness

Standard MDF is often described with a mean density around 700–800 kg/m³, but individual products can lie outside that guide. The table contains mathematical scenarios at 650, 750 and 850 kg/m³. It is not a grading standard and does not replace the data sheet.

Multiply the appropriate kg/m² value by sheet area. Use the product’s declared mass for ordering and transport whenever it is available.

Why actual weight differs from the estimate

The result is affected by:

  • mean density and manufacturing tolerances;
  • actual dimensions and thickness;
  • moisture content when weighed;
  • resin type and amount;
  • sanding and the density profile through the board;
  • laminate, primer, paint, veneer or another facing;
  • batch variation and rounded catalogue values.

Face density can differ from core density, but sheet weight requires the mean density of the whole panel. Do not substitute a surface-density figure.

MDF, HDF and LDF

MDF, HDF and LDF describe families of fibreboard with different densities, but boundaries and commercial names vary between markets. About 700–800 kg/m³ is a common industry guide for standard MDF; HDF is generally denser and LDF lighter. The label alone does not determine sheet weight.

Use the mean density, kg/m² or sheet mass in the documentation. This is particularly important for thin, lightweight, moisture-resistant, fire-retardant and faced panels.

Applications and board selection

MDF is used for furniture parts, doors and drawer fronts, shelving, wall panels, mouldings, routed components, paint finishes, foils and veneers. Its uniform fibre structure and smooth faces suit machining and finishing.

Check intended use, permitted moisture conditions, reaction-to-fire classification, thickness, facing and fastening requirements. Colour alone does not prove that a board is moisture resistant or fire retardant; rely on marking and product documentation.

Weight does not establish load-bearing capacity. Loaded shelves, partitions and heavy fixings require strength, span, support and fastener data from the relevant technical documentation or design.

Transport and storage

Add packaging to the calculated batch mass. Check the payload of vehicles, lifts and handling equipment, load distribution, and a safe method for moving a large sheet.

Store panels flat, adequately supported and protected from moisture. A large panel stored upright without secure support can distort or fall.

Comparison with other sheet materials

Equal dimensions do not mean equal weight. Particleboard uses wood particles, OSB uses oriented strands, and finished laminate flooring includes a core plus additional surface layers. Use product-specific data for each material.
